Art
Arts Education (Dance, Theatre, Music, Visual Arts) classes provide students the opportunity to acquire and practice creative and innovative thinking. The highly sought skills needed in the 21st century labor force require workers who can think creatively and independently to solve problems for which there may be more than one solution.
Regardless of what career path a student will follow, those who can imagine, innovate, understand the “Big Ideas” and the interconnectedness of concepts and cultures, will have the competitive edge in the workforce.
Students at the high school level will have the option of studying an individual arts discipline as an area of interest, or completing a concentration in studies to prepare them for further education and/or a career in the arts. The NC Essential Standards communicate what students should know and be able to do as a result of instruction at each proficiency level; beginning, intermediate, proficient, and advanced.
The Essential Standards are designed to reflect a student’s skills and knowledge mastered at each level. The levels do not reflect grade level. It would not be uncommon for a student to remain at a level for more than one semester, in order to gain all the necessary skills and knowledge, before progressing to the next level.
Students progress through the levels based on their demonstration of skills and their mastery of the knowledge needed to be successful at the next level.
Each Pitt County High School is unique in the Arts Programs offered. Enrollment numbers vary and this may create situations where more than one level would be instructed within the same class. The arts educators at each of the high schools will continually provide updated proficiency levels to the high school counselors to assure the student will be placed in the class which is closest to the student’s proficiency level.
